Description:

Living a creative life means embracing uncertainty, taking bold leaps, and bearing the depths of your heart to the world.

My artistic journey began in Houston, Texas, where I grew up surrounded by music, creativity, and the quiet influence of my father, a visionary architect and artist. From an early age, my parents nurtured my spirit, encouraging me to embrace my talents and dream without limits. Those formative years planted the seeds of a lifelong desire to create, express, and connect.

My transition into the visual arts came through an unexpected path. Decorative painting and Venetian plaster became my first canvas, transforming walls into textured works of art. This hands-on process sparked a deep fascination within me—a fascination with layering, texture, and the way materials could tell a story. Eventually, I channeled this passion into creating on large scale wood panels, marking the beginning of Jo Hyman Art.

In 2020, receiving “Best of Show” at the Durango Art Festival was a profound affirmation of my path. Seeing my work appreciated and finding its place in homes and galleries around the world fills me with a deep sense of purpose.

Nature and history continually inspire me, weaving their influence into every piece I create. The intricate patterns of sand, the resilience of tree bark, and the delicate beauty of flowers all whisper stories of time and transformation. Each piece usually evolves organically.I use numerous layers of plaster, metallic mica powders, acrylics, and gold leaf to create pieces that I hope are both distinctive and captivating. Along this journey, I started to incorporate smaller pieces with my 20-year collection of vintage frames from around the globe, adding a unique dimension to my work

Art, for me, is more than creation, it’s a reflection of faith, a celebration of life, and an invitation to see beauty in unexpected places. My hope is that my work stirs something within each viewer, offering moments of connection, exploration, and joy. This journey, filled with challenges and triumphs, is where I feel most alive and most aligned with my purpose.
