Ann Flemings is an abstract contemporary painter living in Austin, TX. Inspired by moods, memories and the paint combinations on her palette, she creates multi-layered vistas reminiscent of things familiar. Often described as a colorist, her work is about finding the light. Currently, she is pushing her work to a larger scale, working in series and using textiles to inform her imagery.
In her work, she investigates how the layering of color, shape, and line creates depth and beauty. She is intrigued with making shapes that are covered up and then excavated and layered again to reveal new dimensions of the image. Balancing the very physical act of art-making with the right-brain decisions required along the way, she strives to make her most authentic marks. She starts with a loose composition, which she covers, layers, removes, repaints and covers again, transforming the piece through many stages. Ann finds that working through this searching process is oftentimes a metaphor for life.
Ann was introduced to painting at age seven by her maternal grandmother and enjoyed private art lessons during her school years. She holds a BFA in graphic design and an MA in Sociology. She is excited by the work of painters like Alice Sheridan, Brian Rutenberg, and Hannah Bureau and inspired by the vibrant community of artists who call Austin, TX home.
